A Captivating Tale That ‘Warrants’ Your Attention : My quick take on web series “Black Warrant” (Netflix)

I am surprised why there’s not much noise about this warrant—it definitely ‘warrants’ mouth-to-mouth publicity, especially for guys like me who love a tightly bound screenplay that makes a series binge-worthy.

“Black Warrant” on Netflix is a hidden gem that deserves much more attention. The casting is outstanding, with every actor perfectly fitting their roles. Zahan Kapoor, as rookie jailer Sunil Gupta, stands out as a true “actor” from a clan full of “stars.” Rahul Bhat, as the cocky DSP Tomar, brings charm and complexity to his character. Even the actor playing Charles Sobhraj is remarkable, giving the infamous figure an enigmatic aura. It’s evident that the makers handpicked every actor with precision, and the results are impressive.

As a period drama, the series takes you back to the 1980s with stunning attention to detail—right from the notorious Ranga-Billa case to the nostalgia of the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The makers have recreated the era so authentically that you feel completely immersed in the timeline.

One of the most impressive aspects of the series is how it handles historical references. While it’s a fictionalized account of true events, the series retains the real names of prominent figures like Home Minister Zail Singh, Maqbool Bhat, Charles Sobhraj, Ranga & Billa, and even references to then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This is a laudable effort, lending authenticity and weight to the narrative and grounding the drama in its historical context.

What’s refreshing is that the series isn’t a typical serialized drama. Instead, it’s episodic, like a collage of events, all seamlessly woven into a tight screenplay. The depiction of prison life is also one of the series’ strongest aspects. It brilliantly blends the technicalities of jail procedures into the storyline without making it feel like a documentary. The balance between drama and realism is commendable.

However, the length of the series could have been trimmed, as the later parts feel overstretched. The climax, while engaging, leans towards a forced happy

ending that doesn’t fully align with the gritty tone set earlier. These elements detract slightly from the overall impact of the series.

For lovers of gritty, well-crafted crime dramas, “Black Warrant” is an absolute must-watch. Its impeccable casting, production value, and engaging storytelling make it binge-worthy. Adding to its brilliance is the courageous decision to retain real names, making the narrative all the more powerful.

“Don’t miss it; this is a warrant you’d want to serve!”
