A Morbid Satire

A morbid satire: my quick take on Netflix’s “Darlings”

I am a self-styled movie buff, hence can sit through movies of any genre but for ‘dark comedy. Frankly speaking अपुन के समझ बाहर होता है ये Dark Comedy genre. This darlings is supposed to be a dark comedy on the topic of domestic violence, I however found it to be more of a morbid satire with an unpalatable and unconvincing climax.

Last time I heard names like zebu-Nissa, badru-nissa and khairu-nissa from my history professor (these are unmarried daughters of Aurangzeb, few of them were born near my city of Aurangabad). In this movie you have a Badru-Nissa (played by Alia) , she has nothing to do with this historical character but for exhibiting her aurangzebi trait in paying back her abusive husband. Her partner in crime is her mother ‘shamsu-nissa’ who has also bumped off her abusive husband ( this is played by Shefali).

The movie is packed with some of the best actors, apart from Alia Bhat and Shefali Chaya, you have Vijay Varma and Roshan Matthew of the Malayalam movie industry, and even Rajesh Sharma and Vijay Maurya light up screen in their small roles. It is just because of some awesome performance of these actors this sub-average plot is made somewhat watchable.

The movie has a good social message about the ills of domestic violence, I personally can't stand the sight of guys involved in such ‘un-manly’ act of hitting/beating ones sister or wiife. But somehow could not digest the morbid climax.

In my view Darlings can be avoided.
