A Web of Lies, Loyalty, and High-Stakes Drama : My quick take on web series “Deep state” (Disney+)

If you’ve finished all eight seasons of “Homeland” and are craving another dose of international intrigue, “Deep State” might just scratch that itch. Originally released on Fox in 2018 and now streaming on Disney+, this British spy thriller delivers a gritty take on modern-day geopolitics. Season 1 pulls you into the life of Max Easton (played by the ever-intense Mark Strong), a retired MI6 agent who’s trying to enjoy a quiet life in rural France. But, naturally, he’s pulled back into the game for “one last mission” to shut down an Iranian missile program and neutralize some state enemies. Little does he know, he’s not just dealing with simple good-vs-evil scenarios; there are much deeper agendas at play, the kind of agendas that make you wonder if war really is just one massive business opportunity.

The first season does a great job of setting up high-stakes dilemmas, especially when Max’s family gets dragged into the mess, forcing him to make impossible choices. The production values are solid, with international locations that look like they belong in a travel ad rather than a spy thriller. And the action sequences? They’re impressively intense—no shaky cam here.

Season 2, though, takes things to Bamako,Mali, and this is where the plot gets a little tricky. Between the time jumps and new characters, you might find yourself pausing just to keep track. While it’s still an entertaining watch, it doesn’t quite hit the same smooth stride as the first season.

Overall, “Deep State” may not be as iconic as “Homeland,” but it’s definitely binge-worthy if you’re a fan of spy dramas. With 16 episodes across two seasons, it’s an intense, one-time watch that’ll satisfy your thirst for espionage.
