Back to school: My quick take Vijay Sethupati’s classic movie “96”

Of late I have become a fan of Vijay Sethupathis acting prowess, it all started after I watched “Vikram vedha”, though it was out and out a typical Tamil masala movie, my spontaneous reaction was “यह तो हिंदी में ज़रूर बनेगा”. Then I saw his latest “Master” another seeti podu kind of movie. In both these movies, he has played a ‘tapori’ toughie. Then I was casually searching for his body of work (mind you he has acted as many as 50 plus movies so far), fortunately, I stumbled upon “96” (a Hindi dubbed version is also available on youtube), OMG it can be counted as the all-time classic love story, and for a change, this love story does not have a Titanic or Romeo Juliet or Sairaat end.

96 is a clean love story of a young school lover (batch 1996) who get gets separated due to an unfortunate situation and these estranged lovers happen to meet again after 22 years in a reunion. Everything about the movie is of top quality, Direction is awesome, performances are class apart, set in a scenic semi-urban place since the director is a known cinematographer he has captured every frame elegantly. The story and screenplay are simply awesome, the best part is there are no kissing scenes, no sex, no बिछड़नेवाला melodrama, no devdaas syndrome, no villain, no fights, no himmatwala type dream dance sequences which south Indian movies are known for. For a moment you will take this for a classic Malayalam movie because such top-quality products come out from Kollywood.

Vijay Sethupati’s performance is simply awesome, his portrayal of a shy, unexpressive lover boy is outstanding. Trishna plays his perfect foil, their chemistry in the movie is awesome. Director toggles the movie between 1996 and today, and the character who play these leads as school going kids are too good.

I loved this movie thoroughly, incidentally, my passing out a year from engineering college is 86, unfortunately, our mechanical engineering batch was called पिसाळलेले ब्रह्मचारी as there was no मेनका उर्वशी or रंभा in our batch.

Just watch it for wonderful direction, beautiful storyline, awesome acting and maybe it will

open up some ‘lost chambers’ of your sweet memories.
