Breath of fresh air : My quick take on chota AB’s web series ‘Breathe: into the shadows’

Yes it’s indeed a breath of fresh air, rather a new lease of life for chota B. Good to see this son who is unfairly compared to his illustrious Dad, the Big B, come out with a stellar performance in this web series which is released on Prime videos. Looks like chota B is back to his elements which he had displayed in Guru, Sarkar and Dhoom series.

Breathe 2, has nothing to do with the earlier season which had R Madhavan in the lead. It’s not a sequel of Breathe 1, this is a 12 episod long pschyological crime thriller. It has all the elements which makes a good thriller, however I felt that series is stretched a bit long. A tighter edit and crisp character development would have made this a masterpiece.

With the Nepotism debate still hot and brewing in air, many would question why R Madhavan was not considered for this series, answer is pretty much simple that this is not an sequel hence question of retaining the cast does not arise. Secondly though I am not a great fan and admirer chota B, but I am a firm believer that classic gene pool of Jaya and AB will blossom one day. In this series chota B has lifted a heavy weight of very complex and layered character and he’s done it very effectively.

Initially, at the beginning of series you will feel that chota B is a totally misfit in this role but as we progress in the series we realise that CB was fully into his elements right from the word go , he was completely immersed in this character. Infact each and every character in the series is simply awesome. Nitya Menon as a plum roly-poly wife of CB, Hrishikesh Joshi as a sidekick police officer and Srikant Varma as a typical Delhi police guy and for the first time I really enjoyed the work of Sayami kher, but real scene stealer was a Amit Sadh this hunk has really come of his age in this series. All actors were simply fantastic in their respective roles.

I really enjoyed the extremely low light shots in this series, in fact there is scene where a murder takes place in a complete darkness , wow!! Technically it was brilliantly shot. Drone shots of Delhi conought place are breathtaking, even the set design of antagonist’s den is brilliantly done.

The extra length of series (12 episode) does make you breathless at times, in my view the series should have got concluded in 8 episodes only. The director dealt too long and too much on developing the back stories of various plots and characters this had slackened the pace of the plot.

The director tried to emulate Hitchcock here by letting the cat out back in early part of series but still manages to keep you engaged in later part. The climax was bit weak but it makes it obvious that a sequel to this season is definitely on the anvil. But for length and few unwanted side tracks the series is intriguing and watchable, hence don’t miss it.
