Captain America: My quick take on TNT web series ‘The Last ship’

Captain America: My quick take on TNT web series ‘The Last ship’

This 5 seasons long, 56 episodic web series is a binge-worthy affair. Though the series was released in 2014 and its last episode was shown in late 2018, the series has a repeat value due to the current pandemic. As it starts with a very contemporary issue of finding a cure for a global viral pandemic that has wiped away 80% of the world’s population and this US Navy missile destroyer is the only hope.

Season one is damn gripping, as this modern-day Noah’s arc manages to fight against fugitive Russian warlord and finds the cure. The production value of the series is colossal, the cast is damn impressive and the visuals are simply awesome. The best part is that every season has a very strong antagonist who is very difficult to beat, yet this super vessel and its never say die attitude wala crew somehow manages to overpower the adversaries.

The captain (cool) commanding the ship is Tom Chandler (played by handsome Eric Dane) is someone like General Patton who seeks victory at any cost, but unlike Patton, this captain takes on the bull with his arms, he is more a man of action than a general in a war room planning a strategy. One more thing I liked about the series is that they have shown the vulnerability of mighty US military power, and how it can be brought down on its knees.

Five seasons is a 360 deg affair literally and takes you to places like Arctic seas to south China seas to Mediterranean waters to Cuban seas, where this vessel-de-invincible overpowers its enemies. The 56 long episodes will remind you of James' bondish plots of evil scientists and rogue Russian generals, gladiator-like arena fights, and also reminisce the Pearl Harbor moments.

Like all popular web series, the plots taper down in terms of their intensity, and like GOT the final climax of the series is not very appealing. Notwithstanding this loss of steam, the series is indeed a binge-watch worthy and I am sure by the end of it you would have increased your knowledge about frigates, destroyers, battleships, covets, and learn a new phonetic language of alpha-beta to Zulu.

All I can say is that ‘Packet delivered’ ‘Roger that’ and Captain America on the deck.
