Debunk Dybbuk

Debunk Dybbuk: My quick take on a “so-called” horror flick “Dybbuk”

"Halloween" is observed worldwide on October 31st; it is a weird combination of a festival in which people light bonfires and dress up in costumes to scare off ghosts and evil spirits. This year, instead of spending money on strange costumes or funny masks and makeups, just watch "Dybbuk," and I can assure you that no evil spirit, ghost, ghoul, or vampire will dare to enter your house, because they will be insulted by this zero-fear factor, zero-edge-of-your-seat thrill, insipid & wersh plot, and they will simply debunk this Dybbuk.

The only reason I opted to watch this movie was that it is an official remake of a Malayalam movie “Ezra” (which is an adaptation of the Hollywood movie “Possession” – I think), though I have watched Ezra movie (just seen a few clips), after watching this Dybbuk I would not dare to watch it now.

Instead of marketing this film as a "horror" film, the producers should have marketed it as a "tourism promotion" film because the island of Mauritius is beautifully represented in the film. This island nation's forests, beautiful beaches, and pristine environment are absolutely amazing. Aside from the gorgeous setting, there is nothing noteworthy about the film. For a change, instead of the traditional Christian exorcism rituals, you may witness a Jewish exorcism and rituals and discover that the ghosts and spirits are not religious agnostic, and they, too, follow their faith.

Let me admit that I watched this movie with the Australia-England T20WC match, and I was thinking and feeling sorry for the Aussies since they would have had more "horrifying" moments than me watching "dybbuk."

On the acting front, Emran Hashmi, who has already earned a Ph.D. in horror films (Raaz 1,2,3, Ek This Dayan.....), does a good job, but gifted Manav Kaul is squandered in an undercooked character of a young priest.

My recommendation is to either debunk Dybbuk or view it as a "Tourism Promo" film and plan your vacation to this gorgeous Indian Ocean Island country.
