Dimag pe movie bhari

Dimag pe movie bhari: My quick take on post covid’s maiden Hindi movie release “Suraj pe mangal bhari”

Statutory warning: Since this is the first movie to be released in theaters post covid lockdown, pls carry two masks; one to cover your nose and mouth and another to cover your eyes.

If you have any extra masks then cover your ears too so that you can be saved from lame dialogues of the movie.

Some of the fantastic star cast lined up in the movie like Manoj Bajpai, Seema Pahwa, Annu Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa & Vijay Raaj, may entice you to watch the movie but remember sometimes the best of ingredients fail to make a sumptuous biryani. This is biryani is like Birbal’s khichadi, taking ages to simmer and cook. Abhishek Sharma who had given us some good movies like Parmanu & Tere bin Laden in past holds the megaphone once again only to disappoint us with a badly written so-called situational comedy.

Manoj Bajpai has taken out his ‘bhadaas’ of displaying his acting “keeda” with prosthetics while playing this wedding detective. (For a moment I thought he will outdo great Kamal Hassan of Dashavtaar), his character seems to be a master of disguise but ends up being a master of disgust (especially when he cross-dresses as a Maharashtrian lady). He has clearly missed a boat of creating a desi peter seller of Pink Panther. The casting of actors was simply out of place, how can a Supriya Pilgaonkar look like a mother to aged and vacuum shrunken Manoj Bajpai, how can Fatma Sana Shaikh fit into the role of middle-class Marathi mulgi?

The Rane family (Manoj Bajpai, Supriya, Annu Kapoor & Fatma Sana Sheikh) was portrayed in a very “caricaturish” way, just to establish their Marathi roots they spout few Marathi dialogues now and then which is definitely not music to the ears of someone like me who is brought up in Maharashtra. Ranes are pitted against Dhillon’s (Pahwas & Diljit Dosanjh), and the battle of wits takes place while each family is taking turns to establish one-upmanship over the other. The humor quotient is poor, rather humor’s presence is very sporadic. The only good thing about the movie is that it is a “clean” and family watch worthy product, but so is the “Tarak Mehta’s Ulta chashma” (In fact Tarak bhai will be more entertaining than Suraj Bhai)

It is better that you don’t venture into the theater to see this lusterless comedy, I am sure this will soon find its way on OTT platforms.
