Don't Get Caought in the web

Don’t get caught in the web: My quick take on Ben Kingsley’s “Spider in the web”

We Bilgi siblings (Mrutyunjay Bilagi Jagdish Bilgi) while growing up had likings for bond movies, however, my elder brothers loved and adored Sean Connery as the Bond, while I had fancied Roger Moore and later on Pierce Brosnan. My elder brother’s vote was for this Scottish star because he relied less on gadgets. This, in a way, it is true, the Bonds of later generation become more dependent on fancy gadgetry (thanks to Q).

In the movie “spider in the web” (which was recommended by Netflix after I had finished watching the Israeli web series “Black Space”) we see this visible contrast in the working style of two Mossad agents, one played by Ben Kingsley who is on the wrong side of his age and a young agent played by Itay Tiran.

The movie is set in Belgium where Mossad suspects that some Belgian companies are planning to supply chemicals to the Syrian government which can be used to produce chemical weapons. The secret mission to get the evidence, Job is assigned to Ben Kingsley and the young agent is tagged with him mainly to keep a watch on his elder partner.

It’s a slow-paced espionage tale, the only reason I watched it because of beautiful Monica Bellucci, like proverbial old wine she aged gracefully (she must be in her late 50’s now). She has an important role in this spy thriller. The second reason is Ben Kingsley, he is a chameleon-like actor who easily slips into the skin of any character. Both have given wonderful performances.

I liked this Israeli movie, despite its slow pace, it was like watching a vintage spy thriller of the 50s of 60s. However, if you like action-packed thrillers filled with action, car chases, gunshots, helicopters, over the top pyro techniques then this movie is not for you. In that case don’t watch it, else like some spiders you can get entangled in this web.

P.s - Incidentally, movie is based on a true story
