Chand Mera Dil : From Student Of The Year 3 Vibes to Surprisingly Soulful Cinema
I nearly skipped this Dharma drama despite getting hold of tickets for the premiere show in Dubai. Thanks Gaurav Paul đ
But then the long weekend forced me into the theatre with a fair bit of skepticism. Not because of the heavily trolled âAnanyadancenatyamâ clips floating around social media, but because the film was rolling out from KJoâs ever-running conveyor belt of beautiful people discovering emotional damage in designer outfits.
The opening scenes genuinely make you feel like youâve accidentally walked into Student Of The Year 3. Enviable Engineering campus. Stylish youngsters. Slow-motion entries. People looking far too glamorous to understand thermodynamics.
But gradually⌠the film starts pulling you in.
As the love story unfolds, Chand Mera Dil surprisingly finds emotional footing and becomes deeply relatable. Great job, Director Soni Bhai. Beneath all the glossy Dharma wrapping paper lies a story about immature love colliding headfirst with adulthood, expectations, insecurities and emotional chaos.
And honestly⌠it works more often than expected.
On the performance front, the wild hunk from âKillâ, Lakshya Lalwani, transforms himself into a believable boy-next-door romantic lead. And I should confess: this guy has arrived. The screen presence, emotional vulnerability and sincerity he brings to the role hold the film together beautifully. The man suffers with such conviction that half the audience probably wanted to sponsor therapy sessions for him by interval. đ
His counterpart Ananya Panday is literally on a growth trajectory. She has grown leaps and bounds as an actor. No, I am not joking đ
This is probably her most emotionally invested performance so far. Yes, some scenes still drift into melodrama territory, but she genuinely commits to the character.
Visually, the film looks stunning. Every frame feels like Dharma Productions moisturized the camera lens before shooting. And any good love story deserves some memorable music , here, Sachin-Jigarâs title track âChand Mera Dilâ is definitely hummable and adds beautifully to the filmâs emotional mood. The music overall is soulful and lingers longer than some of the screenplay decisions.
That said, the second half does become emotionally overcooked at places. The film occasionally mistakes emotional volume for emotional depth. A tighter edit would have helped. Some scenes stretch longer than Indian wedding buffets.
Still, what stayed with me was its sincerity.
Chand Mera Dil is like that beautifully handwritten love letter which starts poetically⌠then slowly becomes a bank loan agreement.
Messy. Emotional. Overstuffed. Occasionally moving. Occasionally exhausting.
A decent one-time watch if you enjoy modern relationship dramas wrapped in premium Dharma packaging.
Just donât enter expecting DDLJ. This is more like:
âKabhi Khushi Kabhi Therapy.â đ
