Impressive desi Top Gun

Impressive desi top gun : My quick take on ”Shoorveer” (Disney Hotstar)

Not sure if the makers of this impressive series wanted to take mileage on current governments proposed Agniveer scheme , full marks to Disney Hotstar to have come up with this well made series which talks about a novel concept of having an elite task force comprising of best men/women from all of the three forces (Army/Navy/Air force).

Like the elite school of ‘Top Gun’, here too the training and selection process is tough and challenging and of course there has to be a tough mentor, here talented Manish Chaudhary fills in as the khadus-e-azam. The bunch of cadets hand picked for the job are impressive too, I was impressed by performance of Aadil khan, Cassandra and Armaan Ralhan.

The screen play has cleverly integrated lots of incidences which we have either heard or read in the news currently. Hence you will find lots of familiarity in surgical strike and abhinandan , questionable defence deals, terror strike like incidences are very well woven into the screenplay. They have also shown a white-bearded PM taking tough decisions who is ably assisted by a wily NSA (played by Makarand Deshpande)

Best part of the series is the use of real military hardware (MIGs and Sukhoi fighter jets) instead of mockups and CGI creations. The aireal combat, tailgating, dog fights are very impressively filmed. I only wish the VFX used was a bit more professional (at times it looks amateurish ) . Plot is packed with lots of action and thrilling moments which keeps you one the edge of seat. The outdoors are very well shot in Serbia which looks more like our Kashmir. Eight episodes is a bit long in my view, a tighter edit could have made the plot more crisper. Nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed these shoorveer in action.

The elite team in the series is aptly called ‘Hawks’ and in my view we do need hawks more than doves to ensure ‘Aman ki Aasha’.

Watch it
