Into the Vortex of Twists and Myth : My quick take on web series “Suzhal S02” (Amazon Prime)

Suzhal: The Vortex Season 2 is a gripping ride that pulls you in right from the start and refuses to let go—much like the vortex it’s named after. The title itself is a stroke of genius, hinting at the storm of twists, turns, and unsettling truths that await. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story sucks you deeper, making you question everything.

Creators Pushkar and Gayatri have once again delivered a masterclass in storytelling. Known for redefining Tamil cinema with their neo-noir thriller Vikram Vedha (2017) and its equally gripping Hindi remake (2022), they have a knack for crafting morally complex characters and unpredictable narratives. Their web series Suzhal: The Vortex (Season 1) set new benchmarks for Indian crime thrillers, blending social commentary with edge-of-the-seat storytelling. In Season 2, they take it up a notch, seamlessly weaving folklore and mythology into the plot. It feels so organic, almost as if the town itself is whispering its dark secrets. Suzhal takes inspiration from the success of Kantara, proving that Indian filmmakers have found a new, powerful way to blend tradition with modern storytelling. The coastal setting adds a layer of mystery and richness, much like we’ve seen in Paatal Lok and Devara.

The performances are simply outstanding. Kathir as Sub-Inspector Sakkarai brings quiet intensity, while Aishwarya Rajesh’s portrayal of Nandini is layered with raw emotion. Gouri Kishan is especially haunting as Muthu, embodying both trauma and resilience. The ensemble cast, particularly the eight women at the heart of the story, make you feel their pain, anger, and strength.

Visually, the show is breathtaking. The cinematography captures the eerie beauty of the port city, making every frame feel alive. The festival scenes, the mob sequences, the slow-burning tension in dark alleys—it’s all meticulously crafted. The production design deserves a special mention for how it immerses you in this world.

Directors Bramma and Sarjun KM pace the story beautifully. It unfolds like a mystery novel you just can’t put down—sometimes slow and brooding, sometimes hitting you with shocking revelations. The buildup is worth every minute.

If you love stories that aren’t just about solving a mystery but also about peeling back the layers of human nature, Suzhal: The Vortex Season 2 is a must-watch. It’s proof that Pushkar and Gayatri continue to push boundaries, showing us that thrillers can be more than just crime—they can be cultural deep dives, psychological puzzles, and reflections of the world we live in.

Watch it.
