Is reality ‘Real’? : My quick take on the web series “1899 (Netflix)”
Have you enjoyed Christopher Nolan’s body of work? Or Did you enjoy watching the German web series “Dark” (Netflix)?Or do you agree that “Matrix” was based on Vedanta philosophy?
If your answer is “yes” then just don't miss out on this mind-boggling, brain-splitting, mind-bending web series (mind you it's by the same makers of the web series Dark). It is as complex and as confusing and intriguing as Dark. I simply love this genre of as mysterious sci-fi stories जो दिमाग़ का दही बनाता है 😜. The 8-episode long series is a tad slow, to begin with, it takes almost 5 episodes to set up the premise of the plot. But then it catches up with the blistering pace as if Suryakumar Yadav is batting in T20s.
Plot is set on a “Titanesque” ship that is New York bound, it's set in the year 1899, just a year away to enter a new century. Like in the Bombay to Goa movie, here too we have interesting characters (rather mysterious) on board, during the voyage the ship receives a message from another vessel (of the same shipping company) which had gone missing 4 months ago. The captain of the ship decides to find this lost ship against the wishes of all passengers. They locate this lost ship which is now an abandoned vessel and things begin to go awry ढ्यान टेढ्यान 🤔.
Since it is a mysterious series it will be blasphemous to reveal more, but then let me ask you a few questions are we in a dream state or an awakened state? Is the mind experiencer or the experience? Is ‘reality’ what our brain perceives or something beyond? Who creates the reality, your brain or your mind? I am sure such questions you will get when you attend class on Vedanta.
Unlike the web series “Dark”, which was a German language series & later on dubbed into English. This one is shot with a multi-national cast who talk in their native language, hence you will hear French, danish, Chinese, German and of course English. This ploy adds to more authenticity of the plot. The entire cast is impressive (some of whom you would have seen in Dark), hair raising the background score, and top-notch VFX, all add up to raise the production value.
The Series ends up with enough pointers pointing at Season 2 (I just can't wait anymore for S02). These are the subjects which either you like it or you just hate it. Hence watch it at yr own risk, this is definitely not a binge-worthy series as one may have to ruminate over each episode before going to the next.
