Isthmus or bonafide?

Isthmus or bonafide ? : My quick take on Akki’s “Ram Sethu”

I loved it and I have personal reasons for loving this action-adventure movie, first is my family connection with the Archeological Survey of India and the second one is the opening shots of the movie which begins with original shots of the Hindukush mountain range at Bamiyan, Afghanistan which had two of tthe tallest relief statues of Lord Buddha and my Dad had worked there on a restoration project. Director has used the original film clips where one of the most dastard and uncivilized acts of vandalism was shown when the talibanis had destroyed these beautiful statues and in process they not only destroyed two statues but also important pages of human civilization.

Akshay Kumar and Dr Chandraprakash Duwedi have teamed up once again (after a lack luster Samrat Prithviraj Chavhan), this time they work on a plot which has Ramayana as it's backdrop. Akshay Kumar is in the role of an archaeologist working with ASI who is assingned the job to prove is the RamSethu between Rameswaram and Sri Lanka is isthmus (natural) or a man-made structure as claimed in the Ramayana epic. Obviously, there is a team with vested interest who wants this sethu to be destroyed for commercial gains (remember the case fought by Subramaniyam Swamy), will they succeed in their evil plans or our hero spoils their plan is the premise of the movie.

What I liked about the movie is that Akshay does not play his usual self, hence no नाच गाना or stupid comedy nor rowdy rathorwala fight scenes. Secondly the impressive performance of Telugu star Satyadeva who plays an enigmatic character.

Quality of VFX is bit amateurish but is compensated by good underwater shots. The court room drama in the climax is simply paisa vasool.

If you have loved Kartikeya 2, then you will enjoy this movie which attempts good ‘setu’ between fiction and Purana.
