Kora Kagaaz

Kora Kagaaz: My quick take on Pankaj Tripathi’s “Kagaaz”

It is Bhaijaan’s Peepli live attempt (he is the 'presenter of this movie), but unlike Amir khan's Peepli, Bhaijaan’s Kagaz has remained a kora Kagaz. The movie has an incredible plot, rather it is a biographical account of a living person who is declared dead in official records and how he makes it a “life-time” mission to prove that he is alive and kicking. The movie is a shining example of how inept writing and unimaginative direction can end up spoiling the broth.

Looks like Director & writer Satish Kaushik is still under his disastrous spell of “Roop ki Rani and choron ka raja” else he would not have added an item number in this Kagaz. Satish Kaushik exposes his limitations as a director of this movie. The plot is set in the post-emergency era of the 80s hence there are references to Sanjay, Indira & Nasbandi but the art director has failed to recreate that era.

However, the music director was sensible enough to make Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik hum few tracks which will remind us of 80s music. The only saving grace of the movie is the effortless acting of Pankaj Tripathi and Monal Gajjar, who plays the wife of Pankaj.

Just like we keep our hopes alive when MS Dhoni is batting, thinking that “Dhoni hai to mumkin hai”, here too you will sit through the movie, just expecting Pankaj will do something spectacular to bail it out but in vain. Even though I love Pankaj Tripathi’s acting, I felt that he was repeating himself and there is nothing new to his actor’s repository. I hope I will be able to change my views on Pankaj Tripathi’s acting prowess as I am about to start to watch his new web series “Criminal Justice”.

For me it was a kora Kagaaz, maybe it may appeal to you.
