Laapata Audience

Laapata Audience : My quick take on Kiran Rao’s “Lapata Ladies” (theatrical release)

Kiran Rao's 'Laapta Ladies' unfolds like a private screening, and you might just feel like you've accidentally stumbled into someone's cozy home theater (population: two). The grandeur of Jamnagar's pre-wedding festivities seems to have scared off the rest of the audience, leaving me and my ‘ladies’ to enjoy this socio-political satire in splendid isolation. Who needs a crowd when you can have your own personal showing, right?

The movie, with its 'suggestive' title, explores the thrilling journey of girls becoming 'laapata' post-marriage, conveniently dropping their individuality at the doorstep. While the screenplay could have gone full-on feminist, reminiscent of Vanga's masculinity extravaganza, kudos to the writers and director for avoiding the 'feminism' lecture and keeping it light.

The plot, a comedic tangle of swapped brides and 'ghunghat' adventures, takes a subtle swing at archaic social systems. It's a 2-hour treasure hunt with a surprisingly engaging twist or two—perfect for those who enjoy a good, plain vanilla search.

The casting director deserves applause for assembling a cast that makes this hunt entertaining. While most faces were new to me, Ravi Kishan shines as a pan-chewing, corrupt cop, and Geeta Agarwaal is a modern-day Nirupa Roy as the mother of the groom. Special mention to Chaaya Kadam, who leaves an indelible mark in her brief role. The movie's setting in the hinterland of 'naya Pradesh' is beautifully captured, complemented by Ram Sampath's impressive music and the Dhobi Ghats director's skilled touch. Kiran Rao once again showcases her talent.

In the end, 'Laapta Ladies' is a watchable movie that wisely avoids the pitfalls of male bashing. Don't fret if it's not playing near you; it's probably making its way to Netflix soon. After all, who needs a theater audience when you can have a cozy night in with your ladies and some cinematic 'Laapta' charm?"
