Murders in ‘Heaven’: My quick take on the new Malayalam movie “Heaven”
Post Drishyam there is a surge in murder mysteries made by Malayali moviemakers. I should confess they have learned the trick of the trade. This Heaven is not at par with Drishyam but is good enough to keep you engaged till the last frame of the movie. Yes, the climax does have a ‘Drishyami’ twist, but it is simply out of the box setup.
The movie belongs to talented actor Suraj venjaramoodu, he is simply awesome in this investigative thriller. Like Jana Gana Mana , here too he plays an intelligent cop who is known to solve cases in a jiffy. The screenplay takes a turn when he has to investigate an unfortunate incident wherein his only son is murdered. Does he crack this case, can he identify the killer and his motive, and will he settle the score? To know this, you will have to watch murder mystery on Disney Hotstar.
Director unni govindraj , has done a decent job , he appears at ease in his maiden directorial venture. The screenplay has adopted very ‘procedural’ style of solving the murder mystery, because of which plot looks very authentic however misses out on its pace. Which was not the case in Drishyam
, if you can overlook this intermittent slowness of plot then you will enjoy it. The courtroom drama in climax seemed redundant to me.
On performance front, I am simply in awe of Malayalam industries bench sttrength. How many more hidden gems they have!!!! No doubt Suraj was awesome in his role, he looks like a real cop. Even his sidekicks (sorry I don’t know their names) are amazing. Photographer has done a fantastic job in making the ‘God’s own country’ look like Heaven.
