Operation Cleanup

Operation cleanup: My Quick take on Bobby Deol’s “Class of 83”

Had it not for COVID and lockdown measures which followed after that, we would have watched Kabir Khan’s “83” by now. Kabir khans 83 is all about Kapil dev’s devils taking on mighty windies, while this class 83 too is all about taking on the mighty underworld and its nexus with politicians of Mumbai.

The movie is based rather ‘inspired’ on a book with the same title by India’s famous crime reporter and investigative journalist S Hussain Zaidi. His other works like Dongri to Dubai, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, Black Friday has given enough fodder for Bollywood filmmakers to make movies earlier.

An upright police officer who is currently sidelined because of his incorruptible nature, creating his team to clean up the underworld’s menace from the city, this broad storyline might lack novelty as we have seen many Bollywood movies on such theme. Yet the movie is watchable for many reasons. One among them is the performances of its cast, Bobby Deol in his brooding avatar has done full justice to the role of an upright police officer for whom the duty is the foremost priority in life. The five rookie police officers (all new actors) who take up the operation cleanup have given fantastic performances.

Makers have recreated Mumbai of 80s brilliantly, hats off to the creative team for taking care of minute details (e.g. The banner ad on the BEST’s double-decker bus was “Sapat lotion”, a popular balm of those days). The movie is shot in sepia color which has added more authenticity to the plot. Dark and gloomy settings with intermittent rains create a sickening atmosphere however it goes well with the plot of the movie. There is nothing filmi about action scenes, or the dialogs no over the top chase sequences give a realistic touch to the movie so much so that it looks more like a documentary at times. Even the climax where the main villain kalsekar is shot, there is no exchange of rhetoric’s just one sentence and he is gone.

It’s a strange coincidence that the movie is released at the time when such an impeccable legacy of force that had silenced the extortion raj of underworld in the 80s is under the scanner. Class of 83 may not be a master class but can be watched, the best part is that it is hardly 90 mins long class. It is better to keep kids away from the movie as the lingo and associated actions in some shots are not at all advisable for a family viewing ( I sometimes wonder why the makers have to be so graphic and vulgar just because it is an OTT platform – Maybe we may have to have a class of 2020 to clean up such mess )
