Petals of lies : My quick take Malayalam movie “Bougainville” (Sony Liv)
Hats off to Malayalam filmmakers who continue to uphold the legacy of masterful murder mysteries established by films like Drishyam. With Bougainville, Amal Neerad and his team deliver a thriller that earns its place in this esteemed lineage. While it might not reach the towering brilliance of Drishyam, it stands tall as a worthy contender, showcasing the same meticulous storytelling and intricate plotting that define the genre.
One thing I truly admire about Malayalam cinema is its strong foundation in good literature. Bougainville is no exception, being based on Lajo Jose’s novel. Known for his mastery in crafting gripping murder mysteries and thrillers, Lajo Jose’s storytelling provides the perfect backbone for this film, weaving intricate characters and layered narratives that keep you hooked. The adaptation remains faithful to the spirit of his work, which is evident in the film’s literary richness and depth.
The lush green landscapes of Kerala, often referred to as God’s Own Country, are not just a setting but a character in themselves. The beauty of these locations is beautifully captured in Bougainville, adding an extra layer of atmosphere to the film. The verdant hills, misty mornings, and quiet rural streets enhance the sense of isolation and unease, perfectly complementing the unfolding mystery. The natural beauty of Kerala serves as both a contrast and a metaphor to the dark, hidden secrets within the story.
The title Bougainville is itself a stroke of genius—a perfect metaphor for the story. The bougainvillea flower, with its paper-like petals, is strikingly colorful yet devoid of fragrance or true beauty. Much like the film’s narrative, it holds your attention with its allure, yet beneath the surface lies a world that is sharp, thorny, and far from what it appears. The title encapsulates the film’s essence—layers of deception hiding deeper truths.
The casting of the enigmatic Fahadh Faasil as the DCP investigating the crime is a masterstroke. His presence is not only magnetic but also a clever red herring that keeps the audience on edge, constantly second-guessing his role in the unfolding mystery. This ploy elevates the tension and enhances the overall intrigue, ensuring the viewer remains deeply invested.
A special mention must go to Jyothirmayi, whose performance is nothing short of brilliant. She brings a rare intensity and nuance to her role, proving once again the depth of talent in the Malayalam film industry. It’s astonishing how this industry continues to unearth and nurture such exceptional actors who bring authenticity and gravitas to every frame. Not forget the stellar performance of Kunchacko Boban.
Bougainville carves its niche by focusing on atmosphere and emotional depth, proving yet again that Malayalam cinema is unparalleled when it comes to crafting intelligent, gripping narratives. This slow-burn thriller may take its time, but it rewards viewers with a gripping experience that’s high up there among the finest murder mysteries of recent times.
