Picturesque Thar: My quick take on Anil Kapoor’s ‘Thar’ (Netflix)

The first thing you will remember after watching this thriller is the name of its cinematographer ‘Shreya Dev Dube’, in my view, her deft camerawork has made this घिसापीटा plot watchable. Her every frame of the expansive desert speaks volumes of her talent. Even the director Raj Singh Choudhary has to be lauded for setting up this plot in some secluded place in Rajashtan, and keeping a brownish tonality to the frames which added authenticity to this rustic setting. For a change I enjoyed Anurag Kashyap’s dialogue which was very sharp and less waseypur in nature 😜.

The plot is set in a sleepy hamlet, where there are gruesome murders taking place. This is being investigated by local SP (played very well by Anil Kapoor) and his sidekick constable (Satish Kaushik). Then enters a stranger in town who is scouting for manpower for some contractual work. This role is played by Harsh Anil Kapoor. There are some subplots in the movie of Opium smuggling across the border, ex Pak army personnel’s involvement, murders, and dacoity which make the plot astray.

The build-up of the plot is overstretched which could have been avoided. On the performance front, Zakkhas Kapoor has done a zakkhas character, his son harsh Kapoor also shines in his stoic avatar, Fatma Sana sheik looks beautiful and impress in her short role, our Marathi manus Jitendra Joshi is simply brilliant. Action scenes are shot very well.

If you can overlook the extra-long plot build-up, and some gruesome and bloody torture scenes, then you can watch this thriller and revenge saga. Thar as a location is simply splendid, however, Thar has less धार when it comes to its story and plot.

The movie has given us a fitting location for aping a few spaghetti westerns, in the wild west, we have found our own raw rustic Rajasthan
