Rajashtan files : My quick take on Sonakshi’s web series “Dahaad” (Amazon Prime)
Dabang girl Sonakahi is come of age, in dabang she was not scared of “thappad” here she has graduated to a थप्पड़ लगा कर बात करने वाली SI. Wayback in1976 her dad had essayed the role of Inspector Prabhakar Srivavstav in Kaalicharan which turned out to be a tipping point which had made Shatrughan Sinha a huge star, this web series is going to be a similar watershed moment for Sonakshi, as she has given a stellar performance as a no-nonsense cop in some nondescript district of Rajashtan.
The eight-episode-long web series on Amazon is definitely a watchable product mainly because of great ensemble of actors, plus it's setting in rural Rajashtan, plus amazing camera work which has captured the beauty of this मरुस्थल and it's havelis in such a way that one may feel like visiting ‘म्हारो rajashtaan”. When talented makers like Zoya Akthar and her team of writers and directors jam together then the product has to be good.
Plot reminded me of प्र के अत्रे’s famous play ‘तो मी नव्हेच”, involving a psycho serial killer who lures unmarried women into marriage and poisons them after first night. This character is played by another talented actor Vijay Varma , he is a treat to watch. Best part of the plot is , we know ‘who’ the killer is but we keep guessing ‘why’ is he doing it. In short this murder mystery is not a ‘whodunit’ instead it is ‘whydunit’ 😜. Of all the positives of the series, only thing I did not like is the title “दहाड़” as there is no दहाड़ moment in the series. Secondly the screenplay and few subplots could have been tighter, here they end up stretching the plot thin thus making you yawn ( I could not binge-watch it).
Watch it for Sonakshi as Lady Dabang, watch it for Vijay Varma’s layered performance (he will remind you of young Irfan khan) and host of other actors who are simply superlative in their performances. Watch it for funny dialog/s. Watch it for bewitching landscapes and majestic have is, watch it for wholesome entertainment.
