Rip-roaring tale: My quick take on Netflix’s mini-series “Jaguar”

If you have seen and enjoyed Al Pachino’s ‘Hunters’ or Ben Kingsley’s ‘operation finale’, then you should not miss this mini-series ‘Jaguar’ available on Netflix. Like Hunters and Operation Finale the plotline is similar I.e to hunt and bring to justice all the Nazi officials who had fled Germany post-WWII.

Unlike other movies, here the people chasing these Nazi war criminals are not Mossad nor they are any government agencies, these are all Holocaust survivors who have ‘managed to survive in the holocaust. The story revolves around beautiful Isabel whose father and elder, both are killed by Nazi officials and she is taken by them as child labor.

The plot is set in the 1960s in Spain, where many of these Nazi officials have escaped and from where they flee to safe havens incognito. Isabel joins a group of holocaust survivors who tails a ‘torturer in chief’ (known as Dr. Death) who is in hiding and trying to flee.

After watching Money Heist, I have become a big fan of Spanish web series makers, they seem to have mastered the art of making an intriguing web series. Jaguar is no different, it is well-made series offering many edges of seat moments to the audience. The overall feel is like reading war comics. The production value of the series is of top-notch quality and so are the performances of all actors. The dubbing quality (Spanish to English) is also good.

The series title ‘Jaguar’ is apt as this sleek and swift cat is known for its hunting skills as it can hunt its prey on land, on trees, and in water. I only wished the editing was as sleek as a Jaguar, in my view the 6 episode drama could have got folded into 4 episodes. Too many flashbacks of each character as their ordeal during the holocaust might have stretched the series. Makers have resorted to an ‘open-ended’ finishing of this series giving rise to speculations of season 2 which in my view is a good ploy.

You can watch it if you want to enjoy this genre of nail-biter thrillers.
