Thank yum team Thankam

“Thankyum” Team Thankam for this thriller with twist: My Quick take on Malayalam Movie “Thankam” (Amazon Prime)

Movie about Gold and is worth Gold, yet once again Malayali writers have proved that their writing is worth Gold. I have started envying these creative bloaks (Mind you it is the same team which had given a classic movie “Kumbalangi Nights”). Take a bow producer Fahad Fasil.

Though the movie is in Malayalam Language, one can understand the dialogs thanks to good subtitles and occasional change of language in Marathi, Hindi, English & Tamil. This is in fact a Pan India movie as per me, as the plot hovers around “a Mallu murder, taken place in Mumbai and is being investigated in Tamil Nadu and police of three states namely Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu & Kerala are trying to solve the mystery.” Hence the police characters are hand picked from the native states, this is simply a master stroke, as they speak in their own language which adds authenticity to the plot.

I was not aware that Trissur of Kerala is touted as Gold capital of India, from where the Gold and Gold Jewelry is distributed all over India. Movie showcases the plight of the people working in this noble metal trade. It’s a sad irony that people in the trade of precious metal are debt ridden.(There is one shot where they show a gold jewelry workshop having a signboard is handwritten on a cardboard piece, this directors brilliance of showing the contrast in the trade & its workers) Movies writing hits you at various levels, it will startle you that on the face of it someone may appear so cool and friendly but deep down it is difficult to fathom what’s going on in his mind. Let me not dig further as this is a thriller and will let the fizz out.

It’s a saga of friendship between three happy go lucky pals and their adventures (rather mis-adventures) while going to Mumbai to supply Gold. The plot is filled with unexpected twists and turns which will keep you on edge of seat. Entire cast does great justice to wonderful screenplay with their zabardast acting, with Biju Menon leading the pack. The real show stealer is Aamcha Marathi Manus Girish Kulkarni, who plays a bad mouthed cop brilliantly.

Barring ‘atypical’ filmi climax with bit of dhishum dhishum which is rarity in Malayalam movies (maybe director wanted to tell us that bit of copper is ok in Gold jewelry), everything about the movie is exemplary, its well written, well edited, well shot, well-acted & very well directed. Producer Fahad Fasil has literally struck gold in “Thankam” .

Don’t miss it
