The Game: My quick take on a Malayalam movie ‘Nayattu’

My one-word spontaneous reaction after watching this movie on Netflix was ‘Awesome’. I am at loss as to how come Malayalam movies are so good. If you term Drishyam 2 as a masterpiece then you will term Nayattu as a masterclass. Hence before I proceed let me give my verdict about the movie, it's simply a vow movie just don't miss it was if you love thrillers.

Unfortunately, I am not very conversant with Kollywood, my knowledge about this industry is limited to a few like Mohanlal, Mamooty, Fahad Fazil, Dulqar & Prithviraj. But it seems that the industry is filled with many more accomplished guys. In the credits list of Nayattu, I could not identify any actor yet the movie glued me to my seat with zabardast performances by it's cast. In my view, this is out an out success of great writing and even greater direction. Take a bow team Nayattu.

It's a thriller wherein three cops get entangled in a situation that makes them flee. Entire police machinery jumps into action to nab them, hence the title ‘Nayattu’ which means hunt or game. More than a thriller, it turns out to be socio-political satire, wherein the director very subtlety highlights the 3 Ps of our modern society namely People, Police, and Politicians. How each one is taking advantage of one and another. There are few simply classic scenes (take a bow Director Martin Prakkat), first one is the opening shot of a Tug of war competition which played between two teams which are represented by the public and police and the politician are presiding over the event, this metaphorically sets the tone of the story. There is one more scene, rather this is the last scene of the movie where a blind lady is escorted by some adult to the voting booth who takes the blind lady to the EVM and makes the lady press a button of his choice. I simply loved this scene and the loaded message behind it that most of us are gullible voters who are blinded by many things and who are forced to cast our votes in their favor.

Apart from the fantastic story, great performances, and the wonderful direction it is the surreal photography of God's own country that will haunt you. The lush green tea plantations of Munar are simply breathtaking. The movie will make you think as to which is more worse in our society today, is it the caste divide, is it the dirty electoral politics, or the corrupt police-politician nexus?

I loved it, it's available on Netflix with English subtitles. Watch it.
