Uljhan After Watching *Ulajh* on Netflix:
My first ‘uljhan (tangle) after watching this movie was simple: how on earth did this one go straight to OTT? Little did I know, it had a theatrical release last month, but it disappeared from the box office faster than a Rohit Sharma pull shot. My second *uljhan*? Casting Janhvi Kapoor as an IFS officer. I mean, come on! We've just about recovered from seeing real IFS officers like S. Jaishankar *glamourize* diplomacy—now we have Janhvi Kapoor, and I was left wondering: Will she at least manage to *look* intelligent?
But let me give credit where it’s due. The casting is what *kept* me tangled in this web of half-baked ideas. Janhvi Kapoor plays an eager IFS officer, desperate to prove she’s not just another “nepo-kid,” but rather someone who’s ready to rise on merit. 😂 The role fits her perfectly—she’s naive, a little too clueless, and ready to throw herself into danger at the drop of a hat (or a first date!). Her gullibility becomes the perfect tool to get sucked into a treacherous whirlpool of deceit, national secrets, and, well, more *uljhans*.
The movie starts with some promise but soon turns into a masterclass on “How to Overcomplicate a Simple Story.” It’s like watching a malfunctioning GPS—just when you think you’re headed in the right direction, bam! You’re off into plot twists no one asked for. And yet, I somehow managed to finish it. Maybe it was the ensemble cast featuring talented folks like Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathews, Rajesh Tailang, and Adil Hussain that gave me hope that *something* good might happen. Spoiler: It didn’t.
Performance-wise, it’s the Janhvi show, and I’ll give her this: she showcases vulnerability, which is endearing. She tries. You can see the effort (even if it’s sometimes misguided). Sadly, the earnestness of her performance can’t shake the fact that this cub hasn’t quite filled her legendary mother’s shoes yet.
All in all, it’s an *okay* watch. Maybe give it a try if you’re feeling brave enough for the tangled mess. Who knows, you might even get hooked enough for the sequel, where Janhvi could very well transform into a “Black Cobra” action hero. Now *that* I’d watch, just for the laughs!
