Uneasy Silence

Uneasy silence: My quick take on K-Drama “The Silent Sea” (Netflix)

If you enjoy science fiction and thrillers, don't miss out on this latest Korean science fiction miniseries, which is now available on Netflix. It's a gripping, intriguing, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat experience. I've always been impressed by the Korean production quality, particularly their zombie and war-based plots, but watching a futuristic story centered on the Moon is a visual treat. I'm sure the entire web series is a green screen product, but the way the VFX has been integrated into the story is outstanding. These Korean VFX guys, in my opinion, will give the likes of George Lucas, Spielbergs, and Cameroons in Hollywood a run for their money.

Since Galileo named a vast landmass on the Moon's surface the "Sea of Tranquility," this celestial globe has been a source of inspiration for many science fiction writers and has given birth to numerous myths and mysteries. The plot revolves around a rescue lunar mission that is set to visit a deserted space station on the Moon and retrieve some mysterious cargo from this decommissioned space station.

What exactly is this 'mysterious' cargo? Why is it so crucial for humans? What occurred on the space station? Was it an alien attack or a nuclear meltdown? Why are certain crew members chosen for the mission? – As the story progresses, these and other questions will arise in your mind. The writer and director did an excellent job of maintaining the suspense and thrill element until the final episode. Although it is unknown whether the series will have a sequel, some "Lunatic brainwave" will likely spark a plotline for season 2. (I find there is a good scope to stay put of Lunar surface for season 2 or maybe a prequel)

Can’t talk much about the actors, not because of their performances but because my knowledge about them is very little. Yes, one of the main leads is a familiar face, we have seen him in Train to Busan (Gong Yoo). Secondly is there any scope for ‘acting’ in such sci-fi thrillers?

Overall I enjoyed this space odyssey, maybe you can enjoy it if you love this sci-fi genre.
