When Espionage Gets a Goofy Upgrade! : My quick take on movie “VIBE” (theatrical release)

Some movies demand your attention.

Some demand your brain.

VIBE simply demands that you leave your brain at the interval counter and enjoy the ride. 😂

The film officially calls VIBE “Vigilance Intelligence Ballistic Espionage.”

But my version?

VIBE = Very Intelligent, Bloody Entertaining.

Because Kunal Kemmu has done something rather interesting here. He has taken his trademark goofy, situational comedy and sprinkled it with a full-on ‘Dhurandhar’ tadka of espionage.

And it works.

In fact, this could be the beginning of a rather interesting avenue for Kunal.

Look at his comic journey: Go Goa Gone → Madgaon Express → VIBE.

There is a pattern emerging.

Kunal Kemmu seems to have found his mastery in goofy comedy, especially the kind where the situation becomes the joke and the characters don’t even realise how ridiculous they are.

And thank God for that.

Because contemporary “comedy” sometimes seems to have only four settings:

Sexual innuendo.

Below-the-belt jokes.

Childish slapstick.

Or recycled WhatsApp forwards wearing a cinema ticket. 😂

Then there is Kunal Kemmu.

His writing doesn’t need to pull someone’s pants down to pull a laugh out of you.

The humour comes from situations, characters, timing and sheer absurdity.

That’s a craft.

Take a bow, Kunal. 👏

And now he has added espionage to this recipe.

Which makes me wonder…

Why stop here?

If Rohit Shetty has his cop universe and YRF has its spy universe, why can’t Kunal Kemmu build a Goofy Spy Universe? 😂

Imagine India’s intelligence agencies where the missions are classified, the weapons are lethal, the stakes are global…

and the agents are still figuring out what the hell is going on.

Now THAT I would happily buy a ticket for.

Casting? Another VIBE altogether.

The casting is bang on.

Sparsh Srivastav is a genuine surprise package.

And then there is Preity Zinta, playing what feels like a Lady Doval.

She brings authority, attitude and, quite literally, a kickass performance. 😜

The film never pretends to be cerebral cinema.

And that is its biggest strength.

It knows exactly what it is.

A goofy comedy wrapped inside an espionage thriller, without suffering from the Bollywood compulsion to make every joke carry a social message.

So yes, technically:

VIBE = Vigilance Intelligence Ballistic Espionage.

But in my dictionary:

VIBE = Very Intelligent Bloody Entertaining.

And Kunal Kemmu?

You’ve found your comic zone. Now go build that goofy spy universe.

The nation has enough serious spies.

We deserve a few idiots saving it too. 😂
