Womb for lease/rent

Womb for Lease and rent : My quick take on movie “Dukaan” (Theatrical release)

yet another movie on subject of surrogacy. Last time Kirti and Pankaj Tripathi tackled this surrogacy and went on to win accolades and National awards, so was its original Marathi version मला आयी व्ह्ययचय. I was bit surprised as to why the celebrated script writers Siddharth and Garima chose to do this not-so-novel plot for a two hour long oordeal. Just to remind you that Sidharth and Garima have some incredibly successful movies to their credit, like Animal, Ram Leela and Toilet el Prem katha. However this time they chose to wear a director hat too, where they faltered.

Unlike ‘Mimi’ here you will find many Mimis (its a minion) 😄 indulging in leasing out their wombs for some serious money. The plot is set in a quaint Gujarati town of Anand, not sure if this was the same white revolution place that now had become a sarai for surrogacy. The plot hovers around Jasmine (played by Monika Panwar) who leases out her womb for money. In her fourth surrogacy round she goes rogue and elopes with the child. Will the biological parents Get the custody of their legitimate child or the mother who gave birth to his surrogate kid will have the custody? To know more about this, one may have to waste 2 hours in the theater near you.

But for some exquisite locations of enchanting havelis, which are very well captured by the cameraman, the music has made good use of Gujarati folk tunes.

Overall the movie is fast-forwardable.Most of the reviewers have termed this as a comedy Genere movie. I found it bit odd, as felt it more as a social satire.

Like the surrogate mothers who fail to create a warm bond with their babies, similarly the movie too fails create that emotional bond with the audience.मेरे हिसाब से , यह दुकान बड़ी ज़ल्दी बंद होगी, as there is nothing new which movies offers, but kya pata kal ko chal padi to?
