टेढ़ी मेढ़ी स्टोरी

Tedhi-medhi story : My quick take on Netflix’s new release ‘Tribhanga’

My spontaneous reaction after watching this 90 mins ‘ordeal’ of profanity, was ..... isn’t this a kind of rip off of a Marathi play written by Prashant Dalvi (चार चौघी). Incidentally Prashant hails from my place ‘Aurangabad’ , those were the days he and his close buddy Chandrakant Kulkarni were making name for themselves in Marathi theater circles. I still remember the ‘जीगिशा’ theater group started by them. Today both of them (Dalvi and Chandu) have made a mark in Marathi theater and movie circles. The play was ahead of its time, it addressed the issue of womanism and feminism beautifully.

Renuka Shahane who claims to have written the movie and has also directed this ‘Tribhanga’ with only difference between play is the number of females in the plot. Play had four, while movie had three females representing three generations. Played by Tanvi Azmi, Kajol and Palekar.

I would have enjoyed the movie more if the character of Kajol had spouted some sane words, no doubt the character played by her has had very bad childhood and it is conditioned her hard and rebellious exterior but that doesn’t give her a license to spout profanity at will. I think we should start giving ‘G’ (G for Gallup’s) ratings to all the movies and web series released on OTT platforms, with G+ is bearable stuff, G++ is Of GOWasepur class, G+++ is beepable stuff 😜

Movie has an ensemble of wonderful cast, hence the performances are of top notch quality, Kajol is too good in her feisty avataar (sans her language), director Renuka has given a ‘theatrical’ treatment to the plot, you get a feel of watching a damn good marathi play. Baba Azmi’s cinematography is very good.

The word tribhanga is taken from Odissi dance form, which is supposed to be the most sensuous and curvaceous of all other three forms (भंगा, अभंगा and अतिभंगा) , somehow title does not go well with the plot.

You can watch it alone, it’s definitely not a family watch affair.
