‘दीमग’ का दही : My quick take on a fantastic thriller “ वाळवी (Vaalavi)”

If i declare that this Marathi thriller outbeats “Dryshhyam” in every aspect of movie making then I am sure you will be wondering as if ‘यार ये हरिभाऊ का कुछ हिल गया तो नहीं’. But let me stick to my guns, this Vaalvi is probably the best Dark comedy, or should i call it a Thill-com or a comic thriller, whatever you call it, this is simply the best thing to happen in 2023.

Let me confess, that I was not a great fan of the writer-director Paresh Mokashi, as I had termed him as a ‘festival director’ because if you study his repertoire, then most of his movies and short films have won accolades at various film festivals (even at Oscars). But after watching this classic thriller I have become a big fan of this guy. Take a bow buddy.

Since Paresh comes from a very rich Marathi theater background his choice of script/screenplay, choice of cast, tight frames of camera, is simply superlative.

In Vaalvi one get a feeling that one has watched a धमाल नाटक at बालगंधर्व. Plot is simply very dark, where a dysfunctional couple want to end their lives as their lives are not going anywhere, husband is debt ridden while wife is psychic patient fighting her own demons of depression. These roles are essayed by Swapnil Joshi and Anita date.

Husband has an affair with a dentist (played by Shivani Surve) , she is the wisdom tooth of husband who hatch a plan to bump off the mentally deranged wife. Will their so-called ‘perfect’ murder cum suicide plan become successful or will it fail? That is a simple premise of the movie.

Tight script with limited characters with deft camera work and pacy screenplay will not allow you to move out of your seat. The twist a minute kind of treatment given to the script is simply adorable, plus the situational comedy and great one liners prevent the movie becoming darker and gruesome.

Just watch it, and then let me know if am correct in terming this Vaalvi as the best in its genre.

It’s now available on zee5 OTT. (Looks like zee5 guys have found their mojo in selecting good movies of late , after impressive LOST now it is Vaalvi)
