नो यारा : My quick take on Tigmanshu Dhulia’s latest movie ‘Yaara’

Utterly disappointing movie by this NSD pass out. Looks like it is his pre NSD class assignment. The movie boldly claims that it is an official remake of a French movie ‘The gang story’, now I wonder if the original was also a B or C grade movie.

Dhulia, who is associated with some cult movies like Haasil, Paan Singh Tomar, Sahib biwi aur gangster... even Bandit Queen in his repertoire, I wonder how he could conceive this C grade movie. It is said that the movie was shot and made ready by 2016/17 and since then it was in ‘quarantine’. I wish it would have continued its solitary confinement bit more.

The plot spans a period of ’70s to ’90s, precisely the same period when likes of Manmohan Desai’s, Prakash Mehras ruled the roost. Dhulia thought that only by making the actors wear bell-bottoms he will be able to recreate the bygone era, but he forgot that the escapist themes of past appealed to masses then. Now there is a quantum shift in the taste of the audience, especially when it comes to OTT platforms, people can just switch you off.

This movie will remind movie buffs like me the pre-"Apradh" B grade multi starers our desi cowboy Feroz khan used to make. The premise of the movie hovers around awesome foursomes childhood buddies who are partners in crimes, whose crime misadventures bring them closer to anti-nationals, and how they are caught and reformed and once again have to gang up after 20 years to ‘खतम a new खेल’. Though I managed to describe the story outline in a single sentence, there is no semblance of any screenplay in the plot, the editing is patchy, the music and background score is forgettable, dialogues are not at all noteworthy ( surprisingly the movies of my era 70s - 90s are still remembered for its dialogs).

Handsome Hunk Vidyut Jammwal is the leader of the pack, this black belt champ must be kicking himself for accepting this project, Amit Sadh who off late has given some wonderful performances in Breathe 2 and Shakukantala Devi, the law of averages has caught up it seems, Vijay Varma could not recreate his gully boy magic, beautiful Shruti Hassan is just a beautiful prop nothing else.

I am at sea to mention something positive about this movie, even the timing of this यारा (friendship) release seems misfit, remember it coincides the ‘Friendship day’. Tigmanshu धूलियाँ ने अपना reputation धूल में मिला दिया.

Stay away from Yaara, enforce the self-quarantine.
