मारकूटा मार्को: My quick take on Malayalam movie “Marco” (theatrical release)

“हा मार्को नुसता मारतो रे बाबा.” rather “बदडतो” ! If you’re a fan of John Wick’s precision kills, Raid’s claustrophobic brawls, Kill’s high-octane madness, Animal’s grit, or the unapologetic carnage of Korean slashers, then Marco is your ticket to cinematic mayhem. That is, if your stomach can handle it. Fair warning: bring a barf bag (or two) because the gore in this film doesn’t just cross the line—it annihilates it. Maybe they should’ve partnered with airlines for those complimentary paper bags.

Let’s start with the good stuff. The cinematography and action choreography? Chef’s kiss! It’s as if someone airlifted Hollywood’s finest into God’s Own Country. Ravi Basrur’s background score is an adrenaline shot to the brain, much like what we heard in KGF. And Unni Mukundan as Marco? Pure swag. From his Clint Eastwood-inspired cigar-chewing and slow-mo struts to his tuxedo-clad, bone-breaking finesse, he’s the epitome of seeti maar charisma.

But here’s the thing—Marco isn’t so much a movie as it is a three-hour action reel with the occasional interruption of dialogue. Dialogue, by the way, that could fit on the back of a matchbox. The plot? Oh, it’s there somewhere. Supposedly a revenge drama revolving around a Kerala Corleone family (how original). But really, it’s just Marco smashing, slashing, and stomping his way through nameless goons. Story, schmory.

The supporting cast does well, though. Jagadish, Siddique, and Kabir Duhan Singh are solid. And the Hindi dubbing? Surprisingly on point! But the real stars are the action set pieces. There’s a staircase fight that’s pure adrenaline, a corridor brawl that could put Oldboy to shame, and a climax that redefines over-the-top. Who needs item songs or romance when you can have endless bloodbaths?

Final verdict: Marco is for those who like their movies dripping with action and completely devoid of logic. Younger audiences might lap it up, but if you go in expecting a story, better watch something else. Otherwise, buckle up for this slash-a-minute spectacle that proves one thing: when it comes to action, less is definitely not more.
