वाजऊ का (Vajvu ka)?

वाजऊ का (Vajvu ka)?- My quick take on Marathi movie “Pandu”

It is disappointing to say that a film that begins by paying homage to a legend "Shahir Dada Kondke" ends up being a big joke. I grew up watching movies of this multi-faceted personality; he was a director, producer, lyricist, writer, and a flawless performer known for his comic timing and double entendre dialogues. A few films that I recall are Songadya, Ekta Jiv Sadashiv, Ram Ram Gangaram, Aali Angawar, and Pandu hawaladar. He was simply a class act.

I am sure if Dada was alive now and had he seen this Viju Mane directed “Pandu”, then in his inimitable style would have said “Vajvu ka?” (This incidentally is one of the movie titles of Dada kondke). No doubt the makers had packed the movie with some wonderful cast, Kushal Badrike & Bhau kadam who regularly create ruckus and laugh riot on the stage of “Chala Hawa yeu dya” were cast as two constables (the roles which were made immortal by greats like Dada Kondke and Ashok Saraf), Hulkish Praveen Tarade, Hazel eyed Sonali Kulkarni, Music by Avadhoot Gupte, but in vain together they failed to create a magic on screen.

In my view, had someone like Nilesh Sable (he is the writer / director of Chala hawa yevu dya) was involved in scripting of Pandu then I am sure the result would have been different. Insipid script with typical Hindi film Wala plot (assassination plot of a leader and how Pandu fails this plot), forced cheap meaning dialogues, item songs / dances, amateurish action scenes, childish slapstick moments, all put together has spoiled the broth. There are few moments of Bhau and Kushal which generate laughter but alas such moments are few.

Movie is produced by Zee; hence I am sure it will soon be available on Zee5 OTT platform soon. Maybe you can watch then, till then get entertained by “chala hawa yevu dya” or “Maharashtrachi Hasya jatra” and have a hearty laughter.

Overall, I was disappointed by Pandu, and only good thing about the movie is that it goes on to prove that Dada Kondke was second to none and he was indeed a “Dada” when it came to giving silver jubilee hits (BTW he has a Guinness book record for giving consecutive Silver Jubilee hits)
