A classical adaptation of Macbeth

Updated: Apr 19, 2021

जो जी(ता) वो ही ..... : My quick take on Fahad Faasil’s ‘Joji’

Let me confess first that i had become an ardent fan of Fahad Fasil after watching his ‘C U Soon’ , after that i watched his Super Delux with Vijay Sethupathy, hence I just could not miss this latest release which is available on Amazon Prime.

It is said that late Irrfan khan could emote very well through his eyes, and if someone to come nearby to this great khan’s acting prowess then without hesitation I can name Fahad Faasil as someone who can fill in the void left by the khan. In Joji, he plays a titular role in the movie which is based on William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, though I have not read Bards' work nor I have seen Maqbool hence I will not able to comment on how good or bad is the adaptation of this Malayalam classic.

Joji has already garnered rave reviews as a classical adaptation of bards' work, but since I have not read or seen anything based on Macbeth hence I will not join the bandwagon of admirers. For me, this has turned out to be a psychological thriller that is very realistically shot in the picturesque setting of Kerala. The pace of the movie is a bit tardy as the plot and character development are painfully overstretched. But the exemplary cast and their performances make up for this tardiness.

Fahad Faasil plays the dark character of Joji, an engineering college dropout, who is the youngest son of a rubber plantation owner. His greed and over-ambition leads him to heinous crimes and eventually his downfall. Fahad is a chameleon like actor who can slip into skin of any character and here too he doesn't disappoint, rather he is too good as a anti-hero. However more than Fahad's performance, I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of Unnimaya Prasad who has played lady macbeth’s part to the hilt, despite having very little dialogue in the movie she brilliantly emotes through her gestures, her looks, her reactions, and body language.

All other actors are handpicked for the respective role and they all have given superlative performances. The cinematographer and Background score of the movie is awesome. The drone shots of lush green plantations in God’s own country make it look even more heavenly.

Overall it's a good movie, but not as great as Dryshyam 2. You will relish it more if you know about Macbeth, and if don't know about Macbeth then you still love it despite its slow pace for the wonderful performances of each of the well-written characters in the movie.
