Chak-de- Haryana : My quick take on ‘छलांग’
Just few days back I was bit critical on Rajkumar Rao’s outlandish performance in LUDO, today I have to chew my words after watching him perform in ‘chhalang’. Maybe it’s the wonderful chemistry between him and his director Hansal Mehta which has made wonders (remember, together they have given some memorable movies like city lights, omerta, Bose). This time too they have come out with a fine ‘watchable’ product.
Rajkumar Rao plays a stereo typical ‘cocky’ हरियाणवी jatt is a ‘by default’ a PT teacher, who is on school roles courtesy his advocate dad’s (played brilliantly by Satish Kaushik) vasta (वास्ता) 😜. Things unfolds in a way forcing this good for nothing chum gets to do a quantum leap to prove himself to keep his lady love and the job too (नौकरी और छोकरी का सवाल है बाप). Zeeshan Ayub plays the bete noire of Montu and he is in a role of a much qualified PT teacher, love interest of Montu is played by Lively Nusrat bharucha.
Plot is set in a semi urban place in Haryana which gives a certain kind of freshness to the setting. Second good thing about the movie is a good ensemble of cast, especially the school kids and the seniors like Ila arun, Saurabh Shukla , Satish Kaushik light up the screen with their performances. Subtle message about gender equality and enhancing the awareness about sports in school is impressive.
Movie’s chakh-de moment of pitting two unequal teams together and making the underdogs win is quiet lame and predictable. The training sessions of two teams could have been trimmed and edited tightly. Inspite of these creative liberties taken by makers the final product is made watchable by brilliant performances of its cast.
It’s a poor man’s chakh-de-india having sports as the background, can be watched.
