Chiranjeevi's Heropanti

Chiranjeevi’s Heropanti: My Quick take on Chiranjeevi’s Movie “Acharya”

This movie is a good testimony that why everybody cannot become Rajamouli despite pouring in tons of money and roping in the two megastars and packing in all the masala elements. Ram Charan who was riding the high waves of popularity post RRR, would have gotten a rude shock after realizing that even his charisma will not help make Acharya a pan India blockbuster.

The film begins where RRR ends, i.e. it boldly patronizes the "Ma, maati manus"-style leftist message and exemplifies that only Naxalites will be able to iron out society's ills. Chiranjeevi plays a comrade Acharya who sneaks into a village called "Dharmasthali" where dharma has been taken over by Adharma to the point where the high priest of the local temple is shown to be involved in nefarious activities such as murder, rape and bootlegging, and this Acharya helps the village temple in restoring Dharma by cleaning up the system. Didn't it feel like I was narrating a plot from a 1960s film in which some Birju leads an armed struggle to bring an end to some Kanhaiya Lal's unjust regime? Like this dated storyline, this movie is set in some timeless era when Ayurveda treatment was at its peak at the same time some corporates have found uranium mines in the jungles, there are many absurdities packed in the plot.

When you have a Megastar like Chiranjeevi in the lead, the production quality has to be extra-large to match. The production designer has not disappointed by converting the studio into a lavish heritage site. The jungle locations and outdoor shots are simply stunning, the song and dance sequences are simply amazing and are sure to become chartbusters (especially the father and son dance duet), the action scenes are typical of any Chiranjeevi film, and Ramcharan's presence was a bonus. With so many ingredients for a sure-fire blockbuster formula, why can't the film become another RRR? Instead, it has become another Akhanda, a film that had a strong opening weekend but has since faded into obscurity. The answer is simple: content is king, and to create Bahubalis and RRRs, one must be a skilled storyteller like Rajamouli.

It's past time for this 67-year-old megastar to start acting his age rather than gyrating his effeminate dance moves with girls half his age. It's unclear whether or not this film will be released with Hindi dubbing, but even if it does, it's best to avoid it.
