Desi Zero Dark Thirty

Desi zero dark thirty: My quick take on Nagarjuna’s “Wild Dog”

There are many unsung heroes in our forces, who have done the most unimaginable operations, unfortunately, they remain unsung and unnoticed partly because of the nature of their job in weeding out the terrorism menace from our peace-loving country. Wild dog is a movie based on some of the true events from the annals of NIA which had successfully carried out an operation of ‘smuggling out’ one of the most wanted terrorists “Yasin Bhatkal” from Nepal. (I don’t understand why they had to change the character’s name in the movie to Khalid Bhatkal ??). Hope you remember various bomb blast cases like German Bakery which had rocked the cities like Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Bhatkal was the evil man behind these inhuman acts.

I only wished that movie was also dubbed in Hindi, as the plot has a pan-India appeal (This Telegu movie is available in Tamil, Kannada & Malayalam language on the OTT platform). Though the movie does not have the finesse of URI, the subtle handling of the counter-terrorism plot will build up your “josh”. Nagarjuna as the Operation chief Vijay Varma fits the bill despite being on the wrong side of age (he should be 60 plus), he is in perfect shape to play this action-packed role. However, his sidekicks looked very ordinary and suited the role of traffic constables than the fearless commandos. I loved the role of Saiyami Kher for the first time (her earlier movies like Mirzya and Chocked had failed to impress me), she plays a RAW undercover operative in Kathmandu. Like Tapsee Pannu in Baby, Saiyami Kher showed her talent in action scenes in this movie.

Apart from the inspiring plot of the movie, what I liked was the fact makers resisted themselves from ‘renaming’ or ‘rechristening’ the characters in the movie to give a ‘secular’ feel. They did not mince words in naming the country harboring such terror operatives. Action sequences could have been sleeker and the build-up to the chase was a bit overstretched, but overall the movie is impressive and will make every Indian proud of their forces.

The movie is available on Netflix (with English subtitles), and I would strongly recommend it. Remember this is Naya Bharat, jo ghuske Marta hai.

This wild dog barks less but bites more.
