Different Shades

Different Shades : My quick take on the new Malayalam movie “Nizhal”

Thank you dear Reji Thomas for recommending this thriller movie which is one of the latest releases on Amazon prime. Seldom you come across back-to-back movies of an actor which are awesome, just a few days ago I had watched Nayattu which I had reviewed and termed as masterclass wherein I had admired the performance of an actor (I was not knowing him then) Kunchacko Boban, later on doing short research on him I found that he is already 90 movies old and recipient of numerous awards.

Unlike Nayattu where Boban is running away from the law, in Nizhal he is the law himself (he is a District magistrate in the movie). This is a psychological thriller that is very well written and directed. Though the movie starts with a snail’s pace which is a bit of overstretching in my view but hats off to the director in unfolding the story layer by layer as if he is peeling an onion. Director can collude the minds of the audience making confuse as if the thriller plot is gravitating toward being an eerie supernatural twist, then pulling it back to a psychological thriller plot. For a minute I too thought it could be a similar plot like Nicole Kidman’s beautiful movie “The Others”, but I was pleasantly proved wrong.

Performances of Boban and beautiful Nayantara is awesome the entire cast is simply awesome, one should learn how to be natural in front of a camera from these Malayalam actors – take a bow, guys. Though the screenplay has some questionable gaps, it can be ignored, and it is compensated with good performances. I also loved the modern skyline and high-rise structures of Cochin, it is impressive.

We have often heard the Justice delayed is justice denied, but when justice is in full action then justice can’t be denied. The movie may not be as tall as Cochin’s high-rise and as good as Nayattu and Drishyam, but it is a good enough thriller to keep you at the edge of your seat and keep you guessing.
