Engrossing "Kingdom"

Updated: Mar 21, 2021

Engrossing Kingdom : My quick take on a grand web series “The Last kingdom” (Netflix)

There is something special about the movies, dramas, comedies & web series produced by BBC. I am a big fan of this production house. Having watched and loved the web series produced by the History Channel “Vikings”, watching this last kingdom after watching Vikings was simply a surreal experience.

While Vikings was all about the adventurous and ruthless Danes who set out to find new lands, the last kingdom is just the opposite, it tells a story from Saxon’s perspective on how they warded off the Dane invasions. It’s a fictional tale of Uthred, a Saxon child who is raised by Danish Ragnar, who grows up to become an important member of King Alfred’s court. It is king Alfred who is touted as the king who has united all the warring factions and kingdom and created what is called today’s England. Though it is historical fiction, there are many elements & characters in the series which are based on real characters of history. Thus, making the series binge-watch worthy.

When BBC and Netflix got together, one can expect fantastic production quality. Everything about the series is praiseworthy, the characters, plot, screenplay, action scenes, and recreation of the year 866 era is simply awesome. The hour-long episodes are so finely cut that you will yearn to watch the next episode immediately. Four seasons with nearly 10 episodes each will make you addict, it’s a paisa wasool experience.

If you have loved Game of Thrones, Knight fall, Vikings, and Marco Polo, then you should not miss this lost Kingdom. I am eagerly awaiting its season 5, it could be the grand finale, and will see Uthred finally get back what he richly deserves i.e. his "Lost" kingdom.

On a lighter note, in all these 4 seasons it is shown that Danes have ruthlessly conquered nearly 75% portion of England (but for Wessex), if this is true then I wonder if there is any pure Saxon blood in England today. Maybe for the same reason today you see England’s captain is from Ireland, their best bowler from west indies & best all-rounder from New Zealand.
