Game for throne

Game for throne : My quick take on web series “Bambai meri Jaan” (Amazon Prime)

We have seen it in the past, we have read it in the past, we have heard about this in the past, it could be in “Once upon a time in Mumbai” or in “Once upon a time in Mumbai doobara” and in “Company” and in “D-Day” or in “Shootout series”, yes you guessed it right this web series is about the most wanted man of our country. If Bollywood has churned out so many movies about this Don, then is it worth spending time to consume this 10-episode-long web series now available on Amazon Prime?

Even I was bit skeptical before starting to watch this kind of ‘biographical’ account of a man who is responsible for deaths of many fellow Indians. Fearing that series would glorify and glamorise this guy, but then having watched this series I have changed my views.

Though the Makers claim that screenplay is based on a book “Dongri to Dubai” by Hussain Zaidi, but surprisingly the names of the characters are changed eg Kaskar becomes Kadri, haseena becomes habiba and so on, plus they also claim it's a fictional account. I fail to understand the logic. अपून के पल्ले नहीं पड़ा.

Ok, let me park these doubts aside and objectively asses the series on its merits. Like the Godfather triology, this series manages to recreate the “bambai” of past effectively, since the span of the series is few decades the transition is very well designed, each character is well written and well performed, Kay Kay Menon plays the senior Kadri, an upright individual and father of Dara, (played by Avinash Tiwari) both have given their best performance till date. However surprise package was Saurabh Sachdeva who plays Godfather Haji, in past one week this is my third movie/series where I have seen Saurabh, first, it was Haddi, then in Kaala now here, this guy is a chameleon hence gets into the skin of any character With ease. Production design, set design, music and camera work is impressive.

However I wished my TV converted into a बाबाजी का बाइस्कोप so that only “I” alone could watch and hear the series because of some gory and bloody action scenes and foul language. Secondly the over stretched length of each episode is an irritant. Thirdly the texture and gloomy color of each frame made me very claustrophobic.

Overall, it's well made crime drama filled with gruesome action, witty dialogs, plot which will remind you of “Deewar” and “Shakti” movies, and some superlative performances, you can watch it provided you like this genre. Just remember, viewing is strictly “for yr eyes / ears only” 😉
