Hardy’s boys : My quick take on Rajkumar Hirani’s “Dunki” (theatrical release)
Being a great fan of hirani’s craft of storytelling my expectations were sky high before getting into the theater. Plus he had the assistance of his creative dude Abhijat Joshi who Co-wrote this project. But sorry to state the concoction they created together lacked their usual magic, the first half of ‘Dunki’ made me take ‘Dulki’ (डुलकी) .
The trademark humor had got reduced to more छपरी kind of humor dealing with ‘potty’ ‘lavetotry’ & ‘susu’. Hirani’s formula of having making audience Laugh, cry or enjoy a drama in scenes) was bit overstretched in my view, hence the gag at an अंतयात्रा or bit objectionable scene during National Anthem was not to my taste.
Hirani has a knack of exposing and highlighting some social ills in his films, and does it in his inimitable storytelling style which had given him all the hits in past. This time too, the plot line of movie is about illegal immigration, how and why people opt to leave their motherland and yearn to go to greener pastures. Set in the hinterlands of Punjab a group of 4 friends decide to go to Queens land at any cost, this team is led by Hardy played by SRK. Since they have exhausted all the legal means they have to resort to “dunki” trail (illegal way). This is the premise of the plot.
In Hirani’s movies he allows all the characters to shine and blossom, hence here too, the the side kicks of SRKs team (played by Vikram kochar, Sunil Grover and Vicky Kaushal) have shown their sparkle. Tapsee Pannu was the lone black sheep of the pack,however. SRK has reduced himself to a “hamster” 😄 as he has “hammed” his best in this role. I Dont know why he had put on an accent to create a base in his dialogs!! It sounded so unnatural.Hirani’s El-do-rado Boman Irani literally has just one item dance (I want to go to Lavetory 🫤)
Post interval, the movie becomes ‘bearable’ as the dunki gets some horsepower to gallop 😄. Few songs in movie are simply divine, especially the one sung by Sonu Nigam. SRK’s acting looks superlative when he is not mouthing any dialog 😉. Sadly his hit juggernaut post Pathan and Jawan seems to come to grinding halt. Ironically Pathan and Jawan could fill in box office coffers sans meaningful script or story, however here he plays a fauji from “Pathan-kot” and he is shown “chikna” Jawan (thanks to VFX) and the movie has some semblance of storyline, in spite of this, I doubt if Dunki can become a hat-trick hit.
Err….. If the King Khan can take a Dunki trail then one more box office blockbuster is on the way, ये तो मैं डंके के चोट पर डंकी के बारे में कहा सकता हूँ.
