KGF Chapter 0 (Zero)

KGF Chapter 0 (zero): My quick take on Prashant Neel’s maiden movie “Ugramm”

Rocky from KGF Chapter 2 has not only ruled the box office since its release but has also ruled the social media space. There have been numerous interviews, reviews, and discussions with the creators of this El-dorado team. In one of these interviews, I overheard Yash (rocky) wax poetic about Director Neel's debut film "Ugramm," which was a box office success when it was released in 2014. (Keep in mind that it was made for a pittance of 4 crores but grossed more than 30 crores at the box office.) Since then, I've been curious about this action drama; fortunately, I discovered it on YouTube (for free) and in Kannada. Prashant Neel also discussed the influences of Amitabh's era of Sholays and Deewars, as well as the angry young man's avatar, in that interview. (This was particularly clear in his stylized projection of Rocky in KGF.)

After seeing "Ugramm," one can easily deduce the origins of KGF's plot. In this case, too, the protagonist (Agastya) is an anti-hero, similar to Rocky, who makes a living by battering up bad guys from the opposing camp. The mother plays an important role as the plot's chief de-influencer, the hero is a fatherless child, he is a one-man army, the action sequences are as gory and bloody as in KGF, with lots of choppers, knives, and swords, and the plot is set and shot in Kolar, with the only difference being that the movie is filled with less hairy (bearded) men 😊. This Ugramm, like KGF, has a sequel (Ugramm veeram), and the music is also by the same guy, Ravi Basrur (who appears to have kept his volume on high since Ugramm 😊)

It’s a story of our hero Agastya (played very well by Srimurali) who becomes a “Guardian Angel” of Australia returned girl. This girl happens to be a daughter of a gangster who is on run after duping his partner. Now it is easy to guess, that the gangsters want this girl to settle the score with her father, but they have to go through this badass Agastya. The movie is packed with action scenes and for a change, it also has some romantic tracks in between. Pretty Haripriya plays the Australian returnee and the love interest of our hulk Srimurali. The movie is shot in lovely locations of historic Bijapur, Kolar, and some arid regions of North Karnataka which goes well with the plot. The Kannada dialogs are very “punchy”.

If you are a KGF fan, you should watch it because it will give you an insight into how the director conceived of the mega-blockbuster KGF 1 and 2 and how this Angry Young Man (Ugramm) character was reborn. It can be found on YouTube (for free)
