Korean MI Tales

Korean MI tales: My Quick take on Korean movie “Yaksha- Ruthless Operation” (Netflix)

I never knew that word “Yaksha” is also used in Korea, and it carries a similar meaning as we understand in the Indian context which is “Protector of righteous”. Rather the word is commonly used in all the Buddhist countries of Southeast Asia. My spontaneous reaction after watching this fast-paced action thriller is “Boss, Singham 4 ki story mil gayee”. The story will appeal to our desi sensibilities where you have a special ops team headed by Inspector (Korean Singham) who doesn’t believe in playing by the books, in this small team of special operatives, enters a rookie inspector who is being planted to know more about the functioning of the group and its leader’s high headed approach towards solving any case. (Similar to what we have seen in Akshay and Saif's movie “Main Khiladi Tu Anari”)

The plot of the movie is on a global scale where the secret operatives of China, North and South Korea & Japan are involved. It is set in a Chinese city, which is notorious for spies and espionage circuits. Production quality is top-notch, hence an action junkie like me will thoroughly enjoy it. According to me, this is a Korean version of the MI series (Yes, looks like there will be many more sequels to this movie). The storyline is wafer-thin (what else can you expect from such James Bodish movies) where Japanese agents are trying their best to lay their hands on a database of double agents which are active all over the globe and the Yaksha team of Koreans play the spoilsport and “save the world” from imminent disaster. This team ended up cleaning the system and making it mole free.

Park Hae Soo (whom we saw in Squid Games) is the rookie inspector who is a newbie in the special operations team while the lead is led by a no-nonsense cop played very well by Sol Kyung-gu, he is the Ethan Hunt of the movie.

If you are a fan of Rohit Shetty movies then don’t miss this, who knows tomorrow this may get adapted into Bollywood potboiler.
