Lalettan, does it once again.

Lalettan does it once again: My quick review of Mohanlal’s “Monster”

He has mastered the art of hiding a murder, after Drishyam 1&2 Mohanlal did it again in ‘Monster’. Looks like Jitu Joseph Bug has bitten the writer Uday Krishna, as he has written a script that is riddled with twists and turns galore, which can make the Drishyam makers proud. Though the movie is more of a ‘pulp fiction’ than being more realistic as Drishyam.

Director Vysakh haad directed Lalettan earlier in Pulimurgan (which was more of a massy entertainer than most of the content-rich Malayalam movies), and here too he has portrayed Mohanlal in an over-the-top avatar. In the first half of the movie Mohanlal plays a flirtatious Sardar “Lucky Singh”, his portrayal is so cheesy and outlandish that you will start wondering (rather get irritated) why is this Sardar acting like a pest. (Mohanlal is ‘hamm’let 😉 in his first avatar). Yet the director keeps us glued to our seats as you you are intrigued as to what will happen next.

The movie has some pretty faces, rather entire female cast is simply beautiful. I am watching Honey Rose and Laxmi Manchu for the first time, but let me confess that these are beauties with brains. They not only look good but also have given stellar performances. Apart from the twisted plot and stellar cast, it is terrific action scenes in the movie which give the ‘seeti podu’ moments. Just by watching this Rajanikantish action choreography, I get a gut feeling that either Thallaiva or Chiranjeevi will reMake this Monster in their respective languages. The plot is set and shot in Cochin, let me confess that Cochin’s tall skyline is damn impressive.

It will be wrong to compare this movie with Drishyam, but let me tell you that it is as engaging and intriguing as Drishyam. Though the characterisation of ‘antagonist’ might raise few eyebrows and few may not agree with writer's views, however I found that writer/director has very nicely handled the issue which could have become contentious.

Frankly speaking I did not get why the movie was titled as ‘Monster’? Was the maker expecting it to be a monster hit? Whatever the rationale behind the christening of the movie, the end product is quite watchable. It's available on Disney hoststar OTT platform.

Watch it and like me you will also wonder ‘ये मलयाली राइटर्स किस चक्की का आटा खाते है?’
