Mach 10: My quick take on Tom Cruise’s ”Top Gun - Maverick”
Tom Cruise breaks the sound barrier in his TG sequel.
Hats off to makers who could dovetail into a 36-year-old blockbuster movie and come out with a sequel that is even better than the prequel. I watched it on a huge Imax screen (it is designed for such widescreen viewing) with two of my teenage kids, and was surprised to see that they had thoroughly enjoyed it, mind you both were not born when the prequel was released in 1986, it's a good enough testimony on how ‘relevant’ the plot is written.
Captain Pete (Tom Cruise) plays a kind of Peter Pan (someone who has stopped growing - professionally )who is not grown beyond Captain rank while his contemporaries have reached the levels of Admiral. His maverick ways as a test pilot who breaks a Mach 10 sound barrier while testing a hypersonic prototype ends up blowing up the prototype and ultimately gets grounded and is sent to the elite school ‘Top Gun’. This is a different kind of ‘स्कूल वापसी’ for captain Pete, this time he is sent as a trainer and mission coordinator whose job is to train a hand-picked elite group of pilots for a specific combat mission.
It's a typical ‘Chak-de-India type plot where the coach initially finds it hard to gain the trust and confidence of the group. But eventually goes on to prove that experience always precedes youthful exuberance. A Tom Cruise movie is synonymous with some kind of daredevil action stunts, and here it is no different. The ariel aerobatic dogfight sequences are simply breathtaking. The climax combat scenes are ekdum paisa vasool especially if watched on widescreen.
If you are a fan of Tom Cruise then you should not miss it, for me he was an icon as he was the guy who introduced our generation to Ray-bans and his Top Gun leather jacket and like his Kawasaki ninja, (I too had bought my first bike Hero Honda. )
