Madhuri Maa

Madhuri Maa: My quick take on Madhuri’s new movie (Majaa Maa) Amazon

At the outset, your first impression after watching the movie is that ‘this belongs to Ayushman’s repertoire, wherein he loves to pick subjects with some ‘kinkiness’. It is nice to see established stars picking up roles that defy their stardom, like in Student of the year the chocolate hero of our time plays a professor who loves ‘guys’ and now the dhak diva picks this challenging role in MM.

What I loved about the movie is that it gives a feel of watching a good play (नाटक) in a theater. Though the subject is not exactly of my liking (for me a Mother is Supreme and Ultimate, hence no questions can be asked), I thoroughly enjoyed the plot where a mother is subjected to a अग्नीपरीक्षा to save the reputation of her family. Hats off to the director and writer for an impressive screenplay where despite knowing the obvious the audience will get so much invested in the plot that they will vie and pray for a different outcome.

Of course, this is a Madhuri show, she once again proves that she is a rare combo of beauty and brains (talent). There are many moments in the movie where she just emotes through her eyes. She is ably supported by another powerhouse performer Gajraj Rao, who is getting stereotyped in roles of playing an innocent, good-hearted, witty partner, here too he gets to do the same but comes out with flying colors. It was to see Heena star Simone Singh on screen after a long gap.

The plot is set in Gujrat and is beautifully captured by the lensman. A few of the outdoor locations are simply awesome (I've added them to my must-visit list). For Madhuri fans, we have a few beautifully choreographed Garba dance sequences. Dialogs are witty and at times can make you emotional.

Overall though there is less of Majaa in this Majaa Maa, one can still watch it for Maa, Madhuri Maa. It's available on Amazon.
