Nostalgic whispers

Nostalgic whispers : My quick take on “Three of us” (Netflix)

"Three of Us" on Netflix, though embracing a slow burn, transforms into a captivating journey under the skilled direction of Avinash Arun. Despite my usual aversion to slow-paced films, the movie's ability to evoke emotions and hold my attention is a testament to Arun's craftsmanship. His previous Marathi masterpiece, "Killa," available on Zee5, exemplifies his consistency as a director.

Avinash Arun, a FTII-trained cinematographer turned director, seamlessly continues his storytelling prowess from "Killa" to "Three of Us." While "Killa" explores the coming-of-age theme among pre-teens, "Three of Us" ventures into a nostalgic trip down childhood memory lane.

The title, suggestive of a love triangle, might be more fittingly labeled as 'Five of Us' or 'Four of Us' considering the outstanding performances of Shefali Shah, Swanand Kirkere, Jaideep Ahlawat, and the notable contribution of Kadambari Kadam (Avinash Arun's wife). The fifth character, the enchanting location of Vengurla, plays a pivotal role, enhancing the movie's effectiveness. Arun's cinematographic magic eye transforms each frame into a poetic, picturesque postcard.

Shefali Shah's portrayal of a middle-aged woman grappling with dementia, revisiting a place filled with childhood memories, is arguably her best performance to date. Jaideep Ahlawat as her childhood love and Swanand Kirkere, breaking his usual role in music or song lyrics, deliver equally fabulous performance as caring husband of Shefali.

Avinash Arun masterfully incorporates Kumar Gandharva's bhajan in the movie was a master stroke. Nice to see Allu Arjun (Pushpa)’s name in credits (great to see a Massey star presenting a classy movie). The overall experience resonates with the emotional depth of Jagjit Singh's ghazal "Yeh Daulat Bhi Lelo," playing graphically in front of one's eyes. "Three of Us" is truly a poetry in motion that should not be missed.
