Original ‘Farzi’: My quick take on the web series “Farzi” (Amazon Priime)
There’s something special about these Telugu directors and movie makers. Rajamouli is the best example, now I am following Raj & DK duo. there’s something special about these techies who, after their engineering graduation had gone to the US and have returned to pursue their passion in movie making. I’d become their fan after watching ‘the family man’ in both seasons 1 & 2, Especially season two was very hard-hitting (thanks to Samantha, Now awaiting S03)
initially, I thought this Farzi would be based on the story of notorious Telgi and his stamp paper ghotaala or it could be a ripoff of the book by Shree Iyer ‘who painted my money, white’, surprisingly, the story seems to be quite original, and very engaging. It’s about an artist?? (conman) who hand crafts, Indian currency notes.
Unlike Family Man, this 8-episode-long series is a bit tardy, to begin with, they have taken 2 to 3 episodes to set up the premise of the story which puts off the audience. (mind you I took a week to complete 3 episodes) but then after 3 episodes the series just takes off, and it suddenly becomes a binge-watch-worthy Farzi.
Spoiler: I got a feeling that the web series is going to dovetail into the family man universe. Because a lot of pointers in the series, there is a ‘Chelham’ reference and voice-over of Srikant Tewary at one point. So get ready for a web series universe now.
On the positive, the casting and their performances is superlatives ( best part is the characters and actors are same ethnicity and they talk their own lingo - eg Vijay Sethupati plays Tamil enforcement officer) . Shahid Kapoor is the artist, Veteran Amol Palekar is his Nana, kK Menon is the bad man, these guys just rock the show, so does few newbeies like Rashi Khanna (she will remind you of Lara Dutta) & Bhuvan Arora who too will also entertain you. The production value is par with family man. Story is filled with enough masala to keep you engaged.
Climax is inspired by Money Heist setup, this could have been changed, and initial slow pace of screenplay and overuse of profanity and cus words which would make the waseypur gang look KG students , these are few things which needs to be overlooked.
Overrall this Farzi is watchable for it's cast and characters. Sometimes a far copy is better than many so-called original series.
