Poetry on Celluloid

Poetry on celluloid : My quick take on Hemant Rao’s “Sapta samudraache ello - side a”

Just last week, while talking about 3 Shettys who have elevated Kannada films on an enviable pedestal. Never expected that after Raj Shetty’s masterpiece Toby, you would be served with another masterpiece by another Shetty, the Rakshit Shetty. After enjoying the national award for his Charlie 777 last year, looks like Rakshit has staked his claim for another award for this year too with this classic love story.

I am sure this Manu-Priya’s pair will be find it's place next to vasu-sapna or lalia-majnu or Soni-mahiwaal. What I loved about this love story was its writing and the way it was presented, hats off to director Hemant Rao. Mind you, after all he has assisted talented directors like Girish Kasarvalli, hence there is some kind of ‘classiness’ in his presentation. Like a beautiful ballad, the director made use of metaphors galore. (best one was when Manu priya’s gets established in the maiden shot, where Manu is shown as reckless driver who is in hurry to fulfill his dreams, while Priya is more balanced and practical lady). He was ably supported by awesome camera work and musical score.

Saga of lower middle-class dreams of making it big, their sacrifices, their struggles, sudden twists in the tale will keep you glued to yr seat, secondly the title itself is suggestive of sequel (sideB) which is slated to be released next month (Oct 20th). The setup of the plot may remind you of Jack Nicholson’s classic, One Who Flew Over Cuckoo Nest, but the premise here is different.

Rakshit Shetty plays Manu, who works as driver and earns paltry 12,000 Rs, while Rukmini Vasant plays his love interest Priya, a budding singer. They have a small dream of getting married and moving into a simple apartment. Their plans turns head over heels when Manu agrees to take the blame of his boss’s son in a hit-and-run case, he does this to earn quick bucks so that they can buy a house. No doubt Rakshit has given his best performance till date, but the Rukmini Vasant’s Priya is the real show stopper. (this girl is going to be next good thing to happen in kannada film industry).

Will this love story end like any other classic love story like Romeo Juliet or the next Part (Side B ) will bring in a new twist? Or Will a beautiful love story of side A get converted into a violent love story in side B? Director succeeds in creating this intrigue in yr mind, hence like me you too will wait for Oct 20 for release of Side B.

Don't miss this poetic masterpiece, you will love the story, you will love the performances, you will be mesmerised by cinematography, you will return home humming the melodious songs, you will reminisce yr own love story, you will return home 🤔 thinking about what will happen next?
