Refined repackaged & resplendent product: My Quick take on Zack Snyder’s “Justice League”

We have come across umpteen examples of how a masterpiece cinema is remade into a crap version, to name the worst remake I had seen was RGV’s Aag which attempted to relive the Sholay legacy, a second could be Bhansali’s “Devdas” as I have come across many who prefer Yusuf Saab’s Devdas to SRKs version, of late even David Dhawan tried his hand in recreating Govinda magic with his son but failed miserably. Hollywood too has its share of Benhurs, Conans & Papillons which were recreated into forgettable remakes.

However, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is an exception, this movie which was shot and released in 2017 and which had proved to be a dud has been repackaged, retouched, recut & re-released as a “megamovie” with the same name in 2021. (It is also called Snyder’s cut) The result is simply awesome & outstanding. After Sangam & Mera Naam Joker, this is the XXL length movie (which runs for nearly 4 hours) I have ever seen. It so happened that Zack Snyder had shot this movie in 2017 but due unfortunate death of his daughter he could not complete the movie hence the producer (Warner bros) had requested someone else to complete it and release it. The result was awful. Then on public demand producers agreed to re-release the movie and requested Zack to do the needful in 2021. (Like the term crowdfunding, this can be called a crowd-demanded movie) The result is simply magical.

The plot, the story set up, character-building up and their backstories, the mind-boggling CGI, and superb casting with likes of Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavil (Superman), Sexy Gal Godot (Wonder Woman), Huge hunk Jason Mamoa (Aquaman), Ray Fischer ( Cyborg) & chirpy Ezra Miller (Flash). I am sure if you are a comic buff or if you have seen the earlier theatrical release of 2017 you would be knowing the storyline or the plot of how all these superheroes come together to take on a supervillain Steppenwolf who is supremely powerful. Like all Comic books the good prevail over the evil forces, in the end, hence I may not discuss the plot in detail.

However, I felt that the plot is somewhat similar to our Bollywood’s greatest hit of the millennium “Sholay”. Surprised !!, let me explain.

The movie starts with Batman, who like Thakur Baldev Singh is on a recruitment drive to assemble an army of mercenaries to fight against mighty Gabbar (here it is Steppenwolf). In the process, he gathers Aquaman who can be termed as Veeru, a lasso-wielding Wonder woman is our Chabukwaali Basanti, Superman is our Jai because in Sholay Jai dies and here Jai is resurrected from death. Cyborg is nothing but Radha the widow who has seen the annihilation of her entire family while here the Cyborg who is annihilated is brought back into life by making him half man half machine. The chirpy Flash can be equated to Soorma Bhopali for his comic timing. One more reason as to why I have made Batman as Thakur, as compared to all other Superhero’s, the Batman has no skills as such, he can neither fly like Superman, nor survive in water like Aquaman, nor can run at a speed of light like flash nor has skills to match wonder woman and cyborg, in short Batman is like armless Thakur of Sholay.

Jokes apart, the movie is a paisa wasool experience, if your love this genre of CGI-packed comics-based action movies then just don’t miss it. The only thing which I did not relish is the squarish frame of the movie, it gives a feeling of watching a 16 mm projection, I was also surprised to see Nolan as one of the executive producers, if so, why he did not insist on IMAX format this magnum opus. Secondly, I felt this movie should have been released in theaters instead of OTT platforms like HBO. Anyways who knows Warner bros may once again repackage it and release it in theaters too.
